Our patented PerfluorAd® technology outperforms conventional approaches.

PerfluorAd® outperforms granular activated carbon (GAC), ion exchange resins (IX), nanofiltration (NF) and reverse osmosis (RO) in the treatment of PFAS contamination. It offers higher efficiency, lower costs, reduced maintenance and improved environmental protection.

What is PerfluorAd®?

The liquid active ingredient PerfluorAd® from the Cornelsen Group is continuously added to the PFAS-contaminated water.

Developed and patented in 2020 in collaboration with the Fraunhofer Institute UMSICHT, the active ingredient of PerfluorAd® represents the leading technology for PFAS treatment and offers unrivalled effectiveness and innovation.
PerfluorAd® is added to the contaminated water stream as a liquid medium, enabling a high contact frequency and effective binding of PFAS pollutants. This interaction leads to the precipitation and removal of PFAS and ensures cleaner water.

The dosage of PerfluorAd® can be adjusted in real time to the conditions of the raw water to ensure effective treatment and precisely achieve the desired target values.

The precipitation of PFAS by PerfluorAd® serves as a pre-purification stage in which a filtration, flotation or sedimentation process is used to effectively remove the PFAS precipitated by PerfluorAd® and ensure thorough water purification.

This is followed by post-cleaning stages, such as the use of powdered activated carbon (PAC), granular activated carbon (GAC) or ion exchange resins (IX), to ensure complete cleaning. These modular solutions can be adapted to different water conditions and enable optimum results.

The particular strength of the PerfluorAd® /PerfluorAd+® process lies above all in the fact that PFAS can even be reliably removed from highly and cross-contaminated water - i.e. water that is both heavily organically contaminated and highly contaminated with salt.

Why PerfluorAd®?

Highest possible effectiveness up to 99.9%, especially at PFAS concentrations > 10 µg/L

Excellent cleaning results even with complex contaminated water - even highly and cross-contaminated water, which is both heavily organically contaminated and highly saline, can be treated reliably.

Significant cost reduction thanks to smaller activated carbon/ion exchange filters in fine cleaning or longer service life of these downstream filters.

High efficiency in water treatment thanks to the ability to dynamically adapt the treatment process to changing PFAS concentrations, flow rates and background loads.

PerfluorAd® process

The patented PerfluorAd® process is based on a liquid active ingredient that reacts with the PFAS in the system and forms stable flocs. These can be removed from the water by filtration, flotation and sedimentation. The advantage: cleaning is effective and efficient, gentle on the material and without the disadvantages of adsorption. The rinsing water is also treated directly on site, which minimises transport and disposal costs.

The example shown in Figure 1 indicates that, in addition to the PFAS that can currently be analysed, other "much more highly concentrated fluorine-containing water constituents" may be present in fire extinguishing water. Figure 2 shows examples of elimination rates that can be achieved with the PerfluorAd® process. It is very clear from this that the PFAS currently categorised as particularly relevant (sum of 23 PFAS!) can be removed from the water by up to 99.9% when using the PerfluorAd® process.

Applications of PerfluorAd®

PerfluorAd® can be seamlessly integrated into existing cleaning systems, significantly increasing the effectiveness of PFAS removal and cost efficiency.

Proven in practice with scientific expertise

As part of a funding programme for PerfluorAd® technology, the company worked with Fraunhofer UMSICHT the effectiveness of PerfluorAd® in the treatment of water contaminated with extinguishing agents. The results show:

Up to 99.9 per cent (depending on matrix and load) of the PFAS contamination could be eliminated.
